Tried & Tested: GO24-7 Texture Paste & Shampoo

27 07 2011

Offering progressive luxury, GO24-7 is a hair, skin and shave brand for real men. Not the archetypal cave man type of real men, but real men who understand that they really should be taking care of their skin, styling their hair and improving your shave.  Originating from the USA, the brand is said to have none other than David Beckham on its list of admirers – which is pretty impressive in my book. So I got stuck in to 2 key products from the GO24-7 range to see if they lived up to the celebrity endorsed hype…

Price: £14.95 for 67g
Purpose: To craft your style with texture, but give you flexible freedom.
What the brand say: When you need a job done right, reach only for the best. GO24-7 Texture Paste is a no-nonsense pliable paste that performs to perfection to provide texture with definition while encouraging thickness and volume.

The Pour Homme Verdict: I’ll admit, I hadn’t heard of GO24-7 before the Texture Paste landed in my wash bag, but I can honestly say that this is one of (if not the best) styling product I’ve ever tried – hands down. I have hair that’s very difficult to style, it’s short around the sides but much longer and curly on the top. However my current style (a 50’s style quiff if you must know) requires control to slightly straighten without weighing down my curls, but with matt texture and a mouldable hold that I can rework throughout the day. The GO24-7 Texture paste covers all these bases and more. When you apply it, it’s very pliable making it easy to work your style, before setting (but not in a ‘stiff’ way like the hair gels of old) to hold your look in place with a finish that has just the right amount of balance between matt and natural shine. Oh and it smells AMAZING, plus it washes our really easily too – a must buy! 5 out of 5

Price: £12.95 for 264ml
Purpose: To gently put back what hard work and hard play takes out.
What the brand say: Trusted by the stars of sports and screen for clean natural health and performance, GO24-7 Shampoo is luxuriously invigorating and nutrient-rich for any day, any style, any hair-type.

The Pour Homme Verdict: After the overwhelming success of the Texture Paste I had high hopes for the GO24-7 Shampoo, and on the whole this daily shampoo lived up to the hype. Like its styling counterpart it smells lovely, and has all the right component that a top quality shampoo needs – leaving my hair soft, shiny and really manageable. My only complaint is that after I ran out of the Texture Paste the GO24-7 Shampoo struggled to remove all traces of heavy clay styling products and occasionally needed two washes which is why it slips slightly from perfect marks. But if you want my advice – buy both the GO24-7 Texture Paste and Shampoo for one hell of a shampoo/styling combo! 4 out of 5

Grooming News: Men Are Useless

6 10 2010

If you take pride in your appearance, investing time and money in to looking your best then I salute you. But as much as it pains me to say it, grooming conscious guys are still sadly in the minority. Yes the industry as a whole is growing at a much faster rate than the female beauty industry, but there is still some ground to be made up until we can consider ourselves a nation of well groomed men.

One of the big challenges for brands within the industry is how to reach out to the men who seemingly don’t want to be reached. Those in the know understand the advantages of a little personal grooming, hell even the guys in question probably realise that there are improvements to be made – but it’s how to overcome this initial obstacle that seems to be the million dollar question.

This is where I believe the Men Are Useless concept can do its best work. If you haven’t heard of them before, Men Are Useless is a website dedicated to offering men, and their long suffering partners, a monthly grooming subscription service that delivers all the products a man could need throughout the month. Selecting some of the best high street brands around (including the likes of King Of Shaves and Original Source), they deliver a package of tailored grooming products to your door – doing the hard work so you don’t have to, all for less than the price of a pint of beer a week.

The Men Are Useless aim is to “give men (and the people who love them) more time to play out, fight sharks, catch baddies, build dens, practice wheelies and hit the heights they deserve.” But I think they’re selling themselves a bit short. What the ‘Men Are Useless’ concept is quite cleverly doing is getting guys to take more pride in their appearance and try quality grooming products, all the while tricking them into thinking that they’re ‘as much of a man’ as they always have been. Before you know it, these men will be buying the products they love for themselves, and taking a much bigger interest in the way they look.

Rather than trying to ram ‘the metro-sexual male’ down everyone’s throat, Men Are Useless have found a way to get guy grooming without them even realising it! Equally if you’re a guy who has the desire to improve your grooming routine, but isn’t sure where to begin – the Men Are Useless gift boxes are a fantastic place to start. Lastly, women of this world – if your man is still playing hard ball when it comes to looking his best, all you have to do is sign him up to Men Are Useless and before you know it he’ll be stealing your concealer because he wants to cover up his dark circles.

When we finally reach a day when all men look like well groomed Greek Gods, Men Are Useless shouldn’t feel down hearted, they should sit back, light a cigar and feel safe in the knowledge that the world is a better groomed place because of them.

Grooming News: Kérastase Homme To Launch Styling Products

21 09 2010

Back in April I told you that hair care royalty Kérastase would be launching a men’s range – Kérastase Homme – featuring products designed to restore the look, feel and vitality of your hair and scalp. Well I can now reveal that after the success of the shampoo and treatment products within the range, Kérastase Homme will be adding two styling products to this professional hair care range.

Launching this October will be a ‘Fixing Gel’ and a ‘Modelling Pate’ to compliment the current 6-strong product range and continue the luxury men’s hair care revolution. As soon as I can get my hands on them, they’ll be a Pour Homme review to follow.

Tried & Tested: OSiS Dust It Mattifying Powder

29 06 2010

Price: £11.70 for 10g

Purpose: To give your style bags full of texture and the ‘second day’ look.

What the brand say: Kill routine, feel the difference and get natural looking hair with a cool, matt finish from OSiS Dust It Mattifying Powder. Get that second day look instantly with lightweight texture to assist the natural movement of your hair, whilst adding volume and texture for a matt finish.

Pour Homme Verdict

Packaging: OSiS have recently had a complete rebrand with the release of a host of new products and some existing product face lifts. Dust it was one of the heroes that went in for a bit of work and the packaging has come out the other end looking sleeker, cooler and a lot more distinctive – if not slightly like a pot of pepper. 4 out of 5

Value for money: A lot of styling products claim that you need to use minimal product to get the desired effect, but Dust It really does live up to that claim. I have thick hair that’s mid-length and I only used a fraction of what I would normally use – meaning that even at a relatively high price point, Dust It still offers great value for money. 4 out of 5

Ease of use: For me, this is the only area where Dust It loses ground – and there are two reasons for this. Firstly, because the product is a powder it has to be applied by ‘sprinkling’ over your style which often left me with clumps of product rather than an even coverage. Secondly, Dust It is very difficult to wash out – often taking more than one wash to get a clean feel – which I found frustrating at times. 2 out of 5

Performance: If you want matt texture then there is none better than Dust It. It does the ‘second day’ look better than anything else I’ve tried and there isn’t a hint of wet look shine or greasiness about it – it does exactly what the OSiS say it should. 5 out of 5

The verdict: I’ve never found a hair product that is so universally suited to all kinds of hair types and styles – while still remaining effective. I’ve got friends and work colleagues, both male and female with a variety of styles that all use, and love Dust It. So if you can get over the applications issues then you’ve got yourself one hell of a styling product. 4 out of 5
