By now you’ll all be familiar with the format; quirky, arty English dreamers from a grey northern town channel their frustrations with their surroundings into a musical revolution. While comparisons with The Smiths (both musically and culturally) may grow tiresome as The Heartbreaks continue their ascendancy, the Morecambe four-piece have the look, the lyrics and the soaring melodies to forge out their own destiny – as this week’s Song For The Weekend aptly demonstrates.
Frontman Matt Whitehouse recently confessed to NME magazine “I’m at pains to not describe Morecambe as bleak… it doesn’t have the harsh industrialisation of other northern towns. It’s more blighted by adequacy. A mediocrity that’s suffocating.” The irony is, for The Heartbreaks the future looks anything but bleak.
