End it like Beckham

12 08 2010

David Beckham’s international career has been more eventful than most. From public hanging to captain fantastic, he’s had more ups and downs than Katie Price’s sports bra. As Fabio Capello publicly declared him ‘too old’ to continue as an England squad member this week, it left me reflecting on a career that’s seen a lad from East London become a global mega-star.

While its difficult to discuss Beckham without mentioning his baggage (fashion idol/husband to a pop star/A-list icon/heart throb), when the dust has settled he shouldn’t be remembered for changing his hairstyle, or wearing a sarong, but for being one of the best crossers of a ball the world has ever seen.

If we have seen the last of David Beckham the England footballer (last hurrah depending), then let this be the lasting memory of a true icon – a football icon.
